Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has begun assembly of the T5 Transporter from SKD kits through local importer Garuda Mataram Motor.
Indomobil/Garuda Mataram Motor has imported and distributed VW and Audi models for several years.
“We are very pleased that this successful and trusted partner is now also assembling our models for this growth-oriented market,” said VWCV production chief Jens Ocksen.
Around 220 T5s will be assembled in 2012 and the first vehicles will be delivered in February.
Garuda Mataram Motor will sell the vehicles through six VW passenger car dealers in Indonesia and markted initially to potential customers such as public authorities, banks, insurance companies and branch offices of European companies.
“We are exploiting the chances open to our vehicles in this growth-oriented market. The Multivan will be offered as a premium limousine, the Transporter as a reliable commercial vehicle,” said Harald Schomburg, VWCV sales head. “SKD production will open the door and enable us to gain shares of the market. We view our competitive prospects very positively.”
Transporters and Multivans for Indonesian final assembly are taken by truck from the main plant in Hanover to VW’s CKD/SKD centre in Bissendorf/Wedemark about 16km away. There, they are partially disassembled for shipping via Hamburg to Jakarta. Garuda Mataram Motor imports the kits, pays customs duty and reassembles them.
