Volkswagen will build more commercial vehicles in its Hanover plant to boost the German factory’s utilisation until 2011 and secure the 15,000 staff it employs, according to Reuters.

The plant reportedly will shift manufacturing of the closed-roof T5 transporter version to Hanover from its Polish plant in Poznan, build a Microbus version targeted at European markets and make a new “robust pick-up” truck there.

Reuters noted that VW had originally intended to make a new Microbus for the North American market, but dropped this plan given a tougher macroeconomic environment.
