Despite continued weakness in the German domestic market, Volkswagen has announced a big jump in sales in July. Sales grew 10.5% during the month to 310,000 vehicles, bringing year-to-date sales to 2.11m vehicles, a 7.9% increase on the same period a year ago.
“We have never sold so many Volkswagen vehicles in this period before. We look forward with confidence to the months ahead”, said sales and marketing chief Michael Kern.
The biggest growth was in Brazil, where sales rose over 30% to 261,000 units. Proving that recovery in the region is truly underway, sales in neighbouring Argentina also grew strongly, by 20.9% to 60,000 units.
Sales in China were up 25.4% to 443,000 vehicles.
The performance in the rest of the world contrasted sharply with the decline in Volkswagen’s sales in Germany. Sales there were down 10.1% in July to 51,000 units. The rate of decline was much sharper than the market overall which fell just 2.7%. Volkswagen brand sales in Germany for the year to date are also down over 10%.
