Volkswagen Group sales rose 2.44% to 2.49m vehicles from January to March 2015 (+1.8% a year ago).

The automaker’s March sales rose 2.3% to 968,300.

“The delivery trend for the first three months shows there is no guarantee this will be a successful year,” sales chief Christian Klingler said.

“We saw positive momentum in western Europe. However, uncertainty – sometimes significant – continues to prevail on markets in central and eastern Europe as well as South America.”

European sales rose 4.1% to 1.02m in Europe in the first quarter, of which 556,100 (+5.9%) were delivered in western Europe (excluding Germany). 314,800 (+9.1%) in Germany while  central and eastern Europe sales fell 10.6% to 147,500. Russian sales fell 36.4% to 43,500.

North America sales rose 4.1% to 205,800 with US sales slipping 1.4% to 131,600. South American sales fell 17.6% to 152,800 of which 110,900 (-22.1%) were delivered in Brazil.

The group booked slight growth (2.1%) in sales in Asia-Pacific where it reached the million mark for the first time in a first quarter. Of those, 898,400 (+2%) were sold in China, VW’s largest single market.
