Volkswagen Group made record first half deliveries of 4.09m vehicles, up 14.1% year on year in a global market up 6.1%). June sales were up 11.7% to 719,400.

Sales chief Christian Klingler said: “We are also confident we can perform better than the global automobile market during the second half of the year, thanks to our very convincing range of models” but “developments during the first half of the year did not yet allow a projection for the full year”.

But CEO Martin Winterkorn said earlier this week the target was 8m.

“Success in the second six months won’t be automatic. Plenty of hard work lies ahead to keep our deliveries during the second half of the year at a high level,” Klingler added.

North American sales grew 21.2% to 319,100 (263,200) units, of which 211,100 (+20.4%) vehicles were in the US. Asia/Pacific sales rose 19.5% to 1.26m with 1.11m (+16.4%) of those in China. Indian sales rose to 55,100 from 17,400.

Europe sales rose 9.3% to 1.9m in the first half of the year.
