“Success in the second six months won’t be automatic. Plenty of hard work lies ahead to keep our deliveries during the second half of the year at a high level,” Klingler added.

North American sales grew 21.2% to 319,100 (263,200) units, of which 211,100 (+20.4%) vehicles were in the US. Asia/Pacific sales rose 19.5% to 1.26m with 1.11m (+16.4%) of those in China. Indian sales rose to 55,100 from 17,400.

Europe sales rose 9.3% to 1.9m in the first half of the year.

Volkswagen car sales rose 11.8% to 2.53m in the first half, Audi was up 17.7% to 653,000; Skoda 20.2% to 454,700 and even struggling Seat rose 2.5% to 186,400.

Commercial vehicles deliveries rose 29% to 260,300 units.
