Small cars like the Polo have been in great demand since Germany began its EUR2,500 (US$3,402) old for new scrappage scheme which saw sales in April soar to a three year monthly high.
Opel’s Eisenach (Germany) and Zaragoza (Spain) plants have been pumping out rival Corsa subcompacts at full capacity to satisfy demand.
Production of the five-door VW Polo was scheduled to begin at the end of March and the vehicle will hit the market in Germany in the last week of June. Two weeks later it will go on sale across mainland Europe.
Its launch is VW’s most important since last autumn’s roll-out of the sixth generation flagship VW Golf hatchback.
