BMW ended production of the old X3 at Magna Steyr in Graz and began output of the redesigned model at its own Spartanburg plant in South Carolina the next day.

Graz assembled 605,498 units in seven years and CKD kits assembled in Russia, Egypt and Thailand took the total to 614,824 units.

Spartanburg also builds X5 and X6 models. BMW spent US$750m extending the plant for the X3 and increasing capacity to around 200,000 vehicles.

Magna Steyr is now building the Countryman, the first Mini model to be ‘outsourced’.
