Strikes at Azambuja for two hours on each shift will be the latest protest against the shutdown of the plant which is about 50 km northeast of Lisbon.

Juergen Peters, head of IG Metall, Germany’s largest union, which represents GM employees, will also make a presentation at the company’s Opel factory today in Ruesselsheim, Germany. German workers are also planning an overtime ban.

GM has said that production costs at the factory are 500 euros more per vehicle than at other plants and that it will decide by June whether to keep the facility open. Workers at GM’s Portuguese plant held a one-day strike on June 16 while the company and the local government discussed the plant’s future.

A final decision on closing the Azambuja plant has been deferred while the Portuguese government attempts to put together a rescue plan.
