EU Industry Commission has said that he does not foresee any problems for Porsche in meeting future European Union CO2 emissions limits, if it increases its shareholding in Volkswagen to a majority stake.

“Porsche is off the hook as soon as the holding company takes control,” he said in an interview with Capital magazine.

This would mean the low-emitting Volkswagen Polo, could offset Porsche 911 emissions.

In fact, Volkswagen Group may not find it particularly easy to meet EU targets itself. Unlike some of its competitors, it has failed to reduce fleet average CO2 emissions in the past few years, and for the Volkswagen brand they still stand 160g/km. Audi average emissions stand at 180g/km.

The European Commission is proposing a target of 130g/km by 2012, although reports in the past few weeks suggest that the European Parliament is close to agreeing that only 25% of fleets would have to meet this target during the first year, rising to 100% by 2015.

Car makers who fail to meet the requirements would be fined. Porsche CO2 emissions average over 250g/km, so would be likely to be fined without any Volkswagen Group effect.
