Porsche’s new Panamera four-door sports coupe will initially only be available with a traditional combustion engine when launched in 2009. A planned hybrid drvietrain will follow later.

According to dpa-AFX, the hybrid version will be launched at an indeterminate date, depending on the market situation.
The hybrid drivetrain will be developed from the same technology that is currently being developed with Volkswagen and Audi for the Cayenne SUV. It will be a full parallel hybrid drive system and will offer fuel economy of nine litres per 100m (11.1 km/l, or 31.4mpg) on the SUV. No fuel consumption figures have been released for the Panamera hybrid.
Porsche is claiming some environmental credentials being the first manufacturer to launch a hybrid sports car.
The Panamera is due to go into full production in April 2009. Pre-production starts at Leipzig this summer.
