Opel is developing a rival for the Mercedes-Benz R-Class in the ‘Grand-Sports-Tourer’ segment – a crossover between a wagon and an MPV, reports Automobilwoche. It will be based on the Epsilon 2 platform and will go into production in 2008/9, the report says.

The car will be a cross between the Signum and Zafira.

Automobilwoche says that hopes that Opel will produce a classic upper segment model in the future are now fading. Opel boss Hans Demant is quoted as saying that it is unlikely that a decision will be reached this year, but it is now certain that the Insignia concept, designed to replace the Omega, is not viable.
