General Motors’ German subsidiary Opel has offered to retain a key assembly plant with a new car model if workers make concessions on pay and hours of work, according to Deutsche Welle’s website.
The plant at Bochum, in the Ruhr District, is one of four Opel sites in Germany, where, for months, workers have feared job losses
Opel manager Carl-Peter Forster reportedly said Bochum must be more cost-effective.
Deutsche Welle noted that employee delegates and management have been negotiating redundancy terms since last year when Opel outlined plans for 10,000 layoffs – a third of its workforce.
The new model, the five-door Astra is already assembled at a GM plant in Belgium and at Ellesmere Port in England.
