General Motors’s Bochum plant in western Germany will remain open, a senior official has said.

The plant, employing almost 5,200 people near Essen, will remain “an important location in the future,” GM Europe head Nick Reilly told AFP following talks with the premier of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia where the site is located.

The plant assembles Astra and Zafira models and also makes axles and gearboxes. It is one of four Opel plants in Germany, which in total employ around 25,000 people, half the GM European workforce.
