Norsk Hydro says it will increase capacity to 200,000 metric tons to supply carmakers with more sheet for lightweight roofs, side panels and doors at its Grevenbroich rolled products plant in Germany.

Following a selection process, Hydro decided on BWG Bergwerk-und Walzwerk-Maschinenbau as general supplier.

BWG, headquartered in Duisburg, Germany, develops and designs process lines, machines and special constructions.

“We are pleased our important project for the growth market, automotive, is proceeding on time,” said Norsk Hydro EVP, Oliver Bell.

“We will meet surging demand from our customers for high-performance sheet for lighter car bodies.”

The new line will increase annual capacity for aluminium car body sheet to 200,000 tonnes, with start of production scheduled for the second half of 2016.
