New car registrations in Germany increased 6% in May, extending April’s rebound following a weak start to 2005, motor industry association VDA told Reuters on Friday.

Registrations in Europe’s biggest car market reportedly rose to roughly 300,000 vehicles last month, according to preliminary estimates, bringing the cumulative rise in the first five months of the year to 1% versus the year-earlier period.

“That is still not a sales level that gives reason for cheer, but one can still recognise for the first time a somewhat longer-lasting resilience in the upwards trend,” VDA president Bernd Gottschalk said in a statement cited by the news agency.
