Mercedes-Benz has announced an AMG version of the new CLS coupe – called the 55 AMG.

It is powered by a 5.5-litre AMG V8 supercharged engine developing 350kW/476hp and 700Nm of torque and accelerates from rest to 100km/h (62mph) in just 4.7 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h. The CLS 55 AMG has AMG’s sports suspension, high-performance braking and body styling and will go on sale in January 2005.

Like other AMG models, the CLS has a so-called Speedshift five-speed automatic transmission. This allows the driver to choose between fully automatic or manual gear changes with either the selector lever or buttons on the steering wheel. The specification also includes semi-active air suspension with an adaptive damping system with tauter tuning. Large, internally ventilated and perforated brake discs are fitted.

The wheels are 8.5 and 9.5-inch wide 18-inch twin-spoke light-alloy wheels shod with 255/40 and 285/35 wide-base tyres. AMG body tweaks include a new front apron with large air inlets and round fog lamps, side skirts and a distinctive rear apron. There are also chromed, twin oval tailpipes, a special radiator grille with three silver-painted louvers, “V8 Kompressor” badges on the front wings and a boot lid spoiler lip.

The cabin has nappa leather upholstery, perforated AMG sports seats with lateral piping, double stitching and Alcantara panels at shoulder height, an AMG instrument cluster with 320km/h speedometer and chromed door sill panels with the AMG logo.
