Mercedes is planning to build a smaller Maybach, according to the German car magazine auto motor und sport, despite poor demand for the brand to date.

The new model will be around 5.1m long and priced at over EUR200,000 to compete with the planned small Rolls-Royce and the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, according to the magazine.

The model will use the S-Class (W221) platform and will be launched around 2009/2010. A coupe version is also under consideration for a later launch date.

Mercedes is considering using the name Maybach 51.

Power will come from V12 and V8 engines with between 500 and 600 horsepower.
