Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz Cars unit sold 93,900 vehicles worldwide last month, down 11% year on year.


Mercedes-Benz brand sales were down 10% to 83,500 units as sales stabilised in Germany and other key western European markets, China volume grew and  the redesigned E-class was launched, the automaker said.


“The new E-Class has gotten off to a resounding start, and we have delivered more than 40,000 units to customers since the market launch in spring,” sales and marketing chief Klaus Maier said.


Mercedes-Benz sales in Germany were 1,000 units lower last month – 26,900 – than in July 2008.


Year to date Smart sales fell 12% to 71,500 cars worldwide.

Year to date Mercedes volume in China rose 40% to 33,200 units. The E-class sedan was launched there on 21 July.


“Over the coming months, the vehicle will generate additional sales momentum on the Chinese market,” the automaker said.
