Mercedes Car Group sales were up 7% in September to 124,600 units. Sales earlier in the year had slowed partly because of the introduction of the new C-class, so sales in the first nine months of the year were up less than 1% to 942,300 units.
Deliveries of the Mercedes-Benz brand in September were 114,100 units (+7%), and in the first nine months of the year deliveries were up 3% to 872,700.
30,000 C-class sedans were registered during September 2007, compared with 15,800 a year earlier. In a statement the company said that C-class sales are expected to gain additional momentum over the next few months thanks to the introduction of the station wagon that was presented for the first time in September at the Frankfurt motor show as well as through the introduction and a broadening of the engines available to include smaller and more fuel efficient engines.
Sales of the new Smart Fortwo reached 10,500 units, up from 5,400 a year ago. Overall Smart brand sales were up 11% in September.
Mercedes did particularly well in the US in September where sales were up 13% to 22,500 units. Other growth markets were in the Asia Pacific region where Mercedes-Benz posted sales of 14,300, up 9% on September 2006.
