Potential buyers world wide take independent new car safety reveiews very seriously these days and Mazda claims its latest 6 [Atenza in Japan and China] is now officially one of the safest cars available globally, having received the highest possible safety ratings in Europe, Japan, Australia and the US.

Although Mazda built separate, larger versions of the previous generation 6 (and a 626 predecessor) specifically for North America, the third generation, launched in August 2012 is essentially the same car – engine availability and market requirements apart – world wide.

The latest generation received five stars from Euro NCAP last September before getting another maximum grade from Japanese counterpart JNCAP two months later. ANCAP also awarded five stars in November for all model variants available in Australia and New Zealand. Then, in December, the IIHS in the US gave the 6 its best possible ‘Top Safety Pick+’

Announcing these successes, Mazda Europe said the 6 was built according to the automaker’s ‘Proactive Safety philosophy’, which aims to minimise the risk of accidents and maximise the driver’s ability to operate the vehicle safely. The car’s impact-absorbing Skyactiv body uses ultra-high tensile steels and other innovations to bolster body structures, thus delivering “outstanding” passive safety protection to occupants as well as pedestrians. The line also has ‘i-Activesense’ collection of driver supporting active safety technology, which Euro NCAP is incorporating into its evaluations from this year.

All new-generation Mazdas – 6, CX-5 and recently launched 3 – now carry a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.
