MAN is forging ahead with plans to merge with Scania.

“I continue to believe that this merger will happen. I am very optimistic,” said Anton Weinmann, head of MAN’s commercial vehicles division, MAN Nutzfarhzeuge, according to dpa-AFX news.

Weinmann would not comment on the timeframe from talks with Scania. All parties are currently in a so-called ‘cooling down period’.

“If the merger does happen, than we will be able to consolidate our strengths and achieve synergies,” said Weinmann.

MAN estimated the synergy potential at EUR500m in its takeover bid at the end of last year. That figure remains unchanged, said Weinmann.

Neither company would lose its own identify, said Weinmann. “A merger such as this thrives on the strengths of the individual brands.”

Weinmann said that order intakes for the first two months of the year are up 38% compared to a year ago. “We have the strongest MAN Nutzfahrzeuge of all time,” said Weinmann.

Turnover for the full year is expected to rise ten percent to EUR8.7bn, with truck and bus sales rising by a similar proportion to a forecast 87,160 units.

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge’s head of technology, Karl Viktor Schaller, told journalists that MAN is aiming to produce hybrid buses within the next two and a half years, according to Automobilwoche.
