The
German heavy duty truck and bus builder MAN Nutzfahrzeuge expects a flat sales
performance overall in 2001. Håkan Samuelsson, Chairman of the Executive
Board, told a news conference in Munich that he expects a slight contraction
in the truck and bus market in Western Europe of the order of 5 to 8 %. He pointed
to a generally weaker economic outlook in the US and Europe, but also cited
developments in the crude oil market and certain additional national taxes as
adverse factors for operators which have led to ‘uncertainty in the transport
industry, particularly in Germany.’ However, a positive order book and an improved
market share position mean that MAN turnover is forecast to be flat in 2001,
with total sales of vehicles of 70,000 units.

Reviewing year 2000 financial results, it was revealed that in the short fiscal
year the EBIT (result before taxes and interest) declined by 13% to € 138
million. The shortfall was put down to range problems associated with suppliers
following the launch of the TG-A range, as well as delivery delays.
