It is looking increasingly likely that MAN will tranfer bus manufacturing operations from Salzgitter, Germany, to Poland.

MAN board member, Juergen Dorn, told a German language newspaper at the weekend that the board can see no real alternative for the division, called Neoman Bus Group.

MAN started discussions with unions in July about restructuring the division, which lost EUR17m in the second quarter of this year. At the time the company said it was seeking improved productivity in bus assembly and chassis manufacturing, as well as making better use of synergies with the truck business.

Neoman has eight plants employing a total of 8,900 people in Germany, Poland and Turkey. The Salzgitter plant is reportedly the most expensive of the eight plants.

Dorn said that there is a good chance that the 1,400 people currently employed at the bus plant in Salzgitter could find jobs elsewhere in the company. However, only 150-200 of these would be in the truck manufacturing plant also at the Salzgitter site. According to finanzen.net, the truck division has disputed the idea that it could readily absorb the excess workforce.
