German economy minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg is meeting senior representatives of Magna on Tuesday to discuss a possible investment in Opel.

A ministry spokesman told Reuters the two parties would discuss the Austrian-Canadian partsmaker and contract assembler’s ideas.

Citing local media reports, Magna said Magna could take a stake of about 20% in Opel.

Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel has said GM must sell a significant stake in Opel before the German government would provide EUR3.3bn in loan guarantees.

Guttenberg told Der Spiegel magazine last weekend that Magna was a potential partner and that the German government would look seriously at any possible investment.
