Opel workers are concerned about the long-term future of Bochum.

Rainer Einenkel, head of the Bochum works council, told auto motor und sport that GM is considering producing future generations of the Astra at Ruesselsheim (from 2014/15) which would leave Bochum and its 6,200 workers redundant.

Currently only the Vectra and Signum are built at Ruesselsheim. A decision to add the Astra there would help rationalise Opel’s German production base, which currently consists of three assembly plants.

Opel is reportedly considering using the Insignia platform for the 2014/2015 Astra. The Insignia will shortly replace the Vectra.
