Despite the global financial crisis there is still a shortage of engineering specialists in Germany.

According to a study by the German engineers association (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI), average minimum salaries for newly qualified engineers is between EUR36,000 and EUR43,800 a year. Vehicle engineers are at the upper end of this range.

Engineers are sought after by all industries but demand is particularly high in the automotive industry because of the need to develop fuel efficient technologies. The VDI estimates that there are at least 3,000 vacancies in machine and vehicle production.

A BMW spokesman told German press agency dpa the automotive industry needs engineers with specific qualifications. There are some engineers of this calibre in the job market, but not many, according to the automaker.
