BMW will launch a hybrid version of the next-generation 7 series within two to three years.

According to dpa, the car will have a mild hybrid system, which recovers energy from braking, and uses stored electrical energy to supplement the internal combustion engine.

The car will not be able to run in a pure electric mode.

The hybrid technology will be the fruit of a joint development programme with DaimlerChrysler launched in early March 2007 to develop hybrid drive components for passenger cars with rear wheel drive.

The redesigned 7 series will be launched later this year. ‘Scoop’ photos of development prototypes have been published in consumer media over the last year or so.
