Global light vehicle production will exceed 60m units this year, for the first time, according to forecasters Polk Marketing Systems, reported in Automobilwoche.
Almost all of the global 2% growth in light vehicle production comes from non-traditional automotive manufacturing countries, particularly China and South Korea.
China is the fourth largest manufacturing country, with expected output of 4.6m vehicles this year, behind the USA, Japan and Germany.
Polk Marketing Systems expects China to overtake Germany from 2006, the newspaper said.
Polk Marketing Systems also expects Toyota to overtake Ford this year to become the second largest manufacturer, behind GM. Toyota is forecast to record global production growth of 8%.
