Ford of Europe has substantially updated its largest car line, the Honda Accord-sized Mondeo range sold as a four-door saloon and in five-door hatchback and estate car variants.

Ford claims that over 1500 parts are new along with the firm’s first direct-injection petrol engine, the Duratec Sci, a Durashift six-speed manual transmission for higher-powered models and a steering-wheel mounted shift control option for the Durashift 5-tronic automatic transmission introduced on the previous model some months ago.

Claimed Ford luxury ‘firsts’ – that appear to have migrated across the Atlantic from Head Office – include climate-controlled front seats, heated rear seats, power folding door mirrors with ‘puddle’ lamps, automatic headlamps, rain sensing wipers, new Sony audio systems, a rear-seat multi-media entertainment option and a new DVD-based navigation system option with colour touch screen.

In addition, the range-topping ST220 now has an MMT6 six-speed transmission and claimed 250 km/h (155 mph) top speed.

The Duratec SCi direct-injection petrol technology debuts in 1.8-litre, 130PS engine form. Named for its Smart Charge injection system, this new member of Ford’s Duratec engine family delivers claimed fuel economy improvements of between 6 and 8% under normal driving conditions, along with increased power output and reduced noise.

The engine’s lean-burn, stratified operation is effective across 50% of the engine’s full load capability and 60% of maximum engine speed.

The new Duratec SCi is certified to Euro Stage IV emissions and is fitted with an advanced exhaust emission treatment system, featuring a dual ‘three-way’ catalyst configuration. One three-way catalyst is integrated in the exhaust manifold for quick warm-up efficiency under cold-start conditions and a second is downstream.  The exhaust treatment system also features a NOx catalyst, which is especially effective in ensuring consistently low emissions during lean-burn operation such as city traffic conditions.

With six-speed manual transmission, the Mondeo Duratec SCi is claimed to achieve fuel consumption levels of 28.5mpg urban, 49.5mpg extra urban and 39.2mpg combined on the official European driving cycle, while emitting 173 grams per kilometre of CO2, a claimed 7.7% fuel economy improvement over the standard 125PS, 1.8-litre Duratec HE.

Interior changes include a revised centre console with larger Sony audio systems, climate-controlled front seats with a choice of five heating or ventilation levels and the heated rear seat option.

Colours, trims and materials have also been revised.

The luxury Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) system – available with any audio system – allows rear-seat passengers to play DVD-based entertainment and games systems using screens mounted in the rear of the front seats.  An alternative unit supplies audio only.

Exterior design changes include new chrome grille highlights, reprofiled front bumper, larger door mirrors and ‘silvered’ rear indicator lenses. Chrome accents on the upper doorline, door handle inserts and tailgate handle have also been added and estate buyers can now opt for new metallic roof rails.
