Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz has launched a redesigned C-Class replacing the model launched in 2007 which has sold over 2.4m.

On a wheelbase 80mm longer at 2,840mm, the new vehicle is 95mm longer (4,686) and 40mm wider (1810).

The aluminium hybrid body is around 70kg lighter than a conventional steel body and overall weight is reduced by around 100kg.

The lightweight construction is claimed to cut fuel consumption by up to 20% without any loss of performance. The amount of aluminium has risen from under 10% to almost 50%.

Initial launch models are C220 BlueTEC diesel and C180 and C200 petrol. A 1.6 diesel will follow with two power outputs – 115 or 136hp.

There will also be more 2.2-litre diesels, BlueDIRECT petrol engines with third-generation direct injection and hybrids with I4 diesel and petrol engines.
