Daimler is reportedly in early talks with Aston Martin over a supply arrangement to Aston Martin that is thought to involve Mercedes engines.
Bloomberg reported that no decisions have yet been made, citing remarks by a Daimler spokeswoman confirming private contacts between the two and no further details.
Last week Aston Martin completed an investment deal with Investindustrial that it said underpins a significant new product development programme of more than half a billion pounds over the next five years. With the support of major shareholders The Investment Dar, Adeem Investment and, now, Investindustrial, Aston Martin said it is “well positioned to realise its ambitious growth strategy”.
Alongside the financial plans, Aston Martin also needs to work with other OEMs to help to develop new models and buy in some technologies. Not tieing in with a single OEM as an equity partner means that it can talk widely to potential technology providers for specific projects or components. The news of exploratory talks with Daimler comes as no surprise; Aston Martin may well be talking to others also.
