Continental is backing the advanced rating scheme of the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) from 2013 to 2017, unveiled in Brussels recently.
Assistance systems such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane departure warning (LDW) will feature more heavily in the assessment scheme by 2014 and will be key to achieving a top Euro NCAP 5-star rating.
“We consider advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) as a key technology when it comes to enhancing driving safety,” said Continental president chassis & safety division, Ralf Cramer. “They are a crucial safety enhancement and are a vital and decisive step on the road towards accident-free driving.
“ADAS help to further reduce the number of accidents as well as car-related injuries and also help to save lives. The high levels of effectiveness of ADAS are truly a safety advance that will bring about global improvements in traffic safety. The emergency brake assist for trucks will be required by law in Europe starting at the end of 2013.”
For his part, Continental chassis & safety division advanced driver assistance systems head, Friedrich Angerbauer, said: “With regard to new legislations and consumer testing such as Euro NCAP, the advanced driver assistance systems market is very dynamic.
“It can be expected these systems will find their way into most vehicle classes to an increasing percentage. Systems such as the city version of emergency brake assist are already being deployed in smaller vehicles. We see a big growth potential for the near future with ADAS.”
