Bosch says it is up to automakers how they integrate components into complete vehicle systems as the diesel emissions hurricane engulfing Volkswagen gathers momentum.

The German carmaker is to recall nearly 500,000 vehicles in the US after “discrepancies” were found by the Environmental Protection Agency involving diesel emissions testing, while speculation centres on VW being hit with fines of up to US$18bn.

“Discrepancies relate to vehicles with Type EA189 engines, involving some 11m vehicles worldwide,” said VW earlier. “A noticeable deviation between bench test results and actual road use was established solely for this type of engine. Volkswagen is working intensely to eliminate these deviations through technical measures.

“The company is therefore in contact with the relevant authorities and the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, KBA, Kraftfahrtbundesamt.”

Bosch notes Volkswagen has been its customer for decades, especially in the area of powertrain components.

For the VW models named in the reports, Bosch says it supplied the common-rail injection system as well as the delivery and metering module for exhaust-gas treatment.

“Bosch develops injection and exhaust-gas treatment systems that can reduce emissions in every driving situation, in other words, also at high speeds and when accelerating hard,” said a statement sent by the German component producer to just-auto.

“For example, Bosch’s Denoxtronic can reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 95%, also in conditions outside the test cycle. It can thus help fulfil the strictest emissions standards.

“How these components are integrated into complete vehicle systems is the responsibility of each automaker. Please understand that we cannot comment on individual automakers and their calibration work.”

European governments – including those in France and Germany – have announced their own inquiries into testing procedures.
