“A letter effectively exists,” the spokesman told a regular news conference, without providing details, news agency AFP reported.

A Sunday press report had said BAIC had offered to take 51% of Opel with a public guarantee of EUR2.64bn (US$3.7bn).

Germany is currently negotiating with Magna, which wants to buy Opel with the help of Russian capital, but rumours have said the talks could break down.

“Different groups are interested in a takeover of Opel,” the spokesman told AFP.

GM Europe chief Carl-Peter Forster said recently Opel had several suitors but Magna had a “considerable lead” on others.

Forster also said he was confident a deal with Magna would be finalised by mid July.
