China’s BAIC has written to German officials regarding Opel, but an economy ministry spokesman refused on Monday to reveal the contents.

“A letter effectively exists,” the spokesman told a regular news conference, without providing details, news agency AFP reported.

A Sunday press report had said BAIC had offered to take 51% of Opel with a public guarantee of EUR2.64bn (US$3.7bn).

Germany is currently negotiating with Magna, which wants to buy Opel with the help of Russian capital, but rumours have said the talks could break down.

“Different groups are interested in a takeover of Opel,” the spokesman told AFP.
