European carmakers are unhappy about a potential trade agreement between the EU and India which, they claim, is unfairly tilted towards India.
The Financial Times said the deal, as proposed, would allow cars built in India to have immediate duty-free access to the EU while European-built cars imported to India would still face tariffs.
Matthias Wissmann, the president of Germany’s VDA car makers’ association, told the FT: “The Indian side wants to keep a 30% tariff on passenger cars and gives only vague promises that it will negotiate with the EU again in 2017.”
