BMW is considering selling engines and other components to rival companies, according to a report in Automotive News Europe.

The ANE report quoted Friedrich Eichiner, BMW’s board member for corporate and brand development, and suggested that a decsion will be taken before the end of the year.

Mr Eichiner reportedly said: “We are talking with those companies you mentioned,” when asked about reports that said BMW was discussing the supply of engines with General Motors, Daimler and Fiat.

The German media had reported in February 2008 that BMW was seeking potential customers to sell its engines and transmissions. BMW has decided on the year-end deadline because it believes that it would not make sense to go on talking about the plan forever.

It is reported that the car maker’s move to sell engines and components to other automakers is part of BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer’s plan to increase the company’s profitability.
