BMW will not take part in this year’s Auto Mobil International (AMI) exhibition in Leipzig as part of a cost savings project, according to a German newspaper.

Under its current savings programme that will last until 2012, BMW intends to lower its expenses by around EUR6bn, and it is thought the automaker would save about EUR1m by skipping AMI, which is an annual event that usually starts around the end of March, Financial Times Deutschland said.
BMW, which assembles 1- and 3-series cars at a ‘green field’ plant on the outskirts of the city in eastern Germany, does, however, plan to participate in the Geneva motor show at the beginning of March and in the international motor show (IAA) in Frankfurt in September, the paper added. The last IAA [in 2007] attracted almost 1m visitors, or over three times more than AMI.
BMW has not yet decided whether to present its cars at next year’s AMI, Financial Times Deutschland said.
