Audi has invested around EUR230m ($US289.3m) on production of its redesigned TT sports coupe, the Volkswagen unit said on Tuesday.

According to Reuters, production capacity exceeds that of the predecessor model and 20,000 units should come off the assembly line by the end of this year.

Audi’s factory in Ingolstadt makes and paints the bodies which are then sent to a plant in Gyoer, Hungary, for final assembly.

Serial production started in Gyoer on Tuesday, Reuters added.
