Volkswagen‘s Audi brand has posted record car deliveries for the 2013 fiscal year and said it will expand its German workforce in 2014.

Audi said that it delivered a total of around 1.575m Audi brand cars in fiscal 2013 (up 8.3% on the previous year). Revenue for the year was EUR49.9bn (up 2.2%) with EUR5.03bn operating profit (slightly down on 2012).

Audi posted a 10.1% operating return on sales (2012 was 11%), but the company said it was still above an 8-10% “strategic target corridor”.

Audi said breaching 1.5m cars sold in a year was achieved two years ahead of target.

Audi boss Rupert Stadler said: “2013 was an extraordinary year and we also remain on course for success in 2014. The past twelve months have seen us embark on a huge globalisation drive in opening new plants in Hungary and China, as well as preparing for local production operations in Mexico and Brazil.

“The new A3 family is proving very popular with our customers, as are our SUV models in the Q car line.”
