Audi may be planning to build the new A3 Cabriolet at its Gyor plant in Hungary, alongside the Audi TT sports car, but it may also be considering building the car in Brussels.

According to information obtained by German automotive industry magazine, Automobilwoche, the A3 Cabriolet would be assembled in Gyor along similar lines as the Audi TT, with which it shares a platform. The body parts for the TT are produced in Germany and shipped to Gyor for final assembly. The same would be the case for the A3 Cabriolet, which is due to go on sale at the beginning of 2008.
However, the website motorauthority.com suggest that Volkswagen’s new CEO, Dr. Martin Winterkorn, is considering building the car in Brussels. The advantage of Brussels would be that capacity will be readily available when it ceases production of the Golf whereas Hungary would have to be expanded. There may also be some tax advantages.
Separately Germany’s ‘Spiegel’ magazine has reported that Winterkorn is keen to build a new small Audi, designated A1, in Brussels. Volkswagen has decided to cease production of the Golf there, although as part of its tariff agreement with German unions it cannot close any plants, anywhere in the world. Around 4,000 of a total of 5,400 jobs in Brussels are, however, under threat.
Dpa-AFX reports that union representative, Bernd Osterloh, is traveling to Brussels today to discuss the option of building an Audi at the plant.
