The German car magazine Auto Bild has shown a picture of a Mini competitior from Audi, dubbed ‘A1’.

The highly regarded expert on future models, Georg Kacher, expects the A1 to fill the gap in Audi’s product range below the A3, now that the A2 will definitely not be replaced.

The picture shown in the latest issue of Auto Bild is not the same as one shown a year ago, which was a hoax.

Kacher has spoken with Volkswagen Group and Audi executives. One product development executive said that the last thing Audi wants is a compact version of the A3. A small car to challenge the Mini would be one way to avoid this.

At the moment Kacher understands that the product development team is working on four design scenarios – a shooting brake (like the concept car shown in 2005), a sportback, activity sportster (e.g. the Steppenwolf concept from 2000) or an activity coupe (the Al2 Open End concept from 1997). In any event the car would have three doors and no more.
