The Volkswagen group’s trend towards smaller petrol engines with forced induction continues with a new 1.4-litre unit for the Audi A3 range.
The automaker said its “size-defying 125PS output” is due to a combination of the latest turbocharger technology and efficiency-boosting FSI direct petrol injection.
Replacing the existing 1.6-litre, 115PS FSI unit, the 1,390cc turbocharged engine combines a 10PS power advantage over its naturally aspirated predecessor with a 45Nm torque boost to 200Nm, 80% of which is available from just 1,250rpm, and 100% from 1,500rpm.
The A3 1.4 TFSI can reach 62mph (100km/h) from rest over one second faster than its 1.6FSI predecessor at 9.6 seconds, can carry on to a 126mph top speed and achieved 43.5mpg on the EU combined cycle test. CO2 output is down to 154g/km.
Some VW models have the option of a turbocharged and supercharged 1.4-litre petrol engine.
