Lexus says it has “learned a lot” from its recall of 17,000 cars in the UK last autumn, with the automaker convinced it has turned the tide in terms of consumer confidence.

Speaking to just-auto in Geneva this week, Lexus Europe head Andy Pfeiffenberger conceded the two voluntary recalls – involving IS, GS and RX models – had caused some damage.

“Clearly we have been damaged by the recall, but those who own a Lexus vehicle have been impressed by how customer-focused we have been in solving their problems,” he said.

“The challenge is to translate that good will into greater momentum within the overall market. It is going to take some time for us to come back and rebuild the trust with the customer – we are on the right track. We have tried to make the best of what is clearly not an ideal situation for us and our customers – we have learned a lot.”

The first recall concerned the brake master cylinder fitted to IS, GS and RX models built between February 2003 and November 2005. The second involved the fuel pump on GS 300 models built between September 2004 and February 2006.

Lexus had said it knew of no reported accidents as a result of the issues.
