Opel’s RAKe concept is a modern day Messerschmitt which could be on the road within five years.
The electric car has a wide, car-like front track and narrow rear end with back wheels close together and it carries two people, one behind the other just like the old ‘bubble car’ Messerschmitt.
GM Europe chief Nick Reilly said the company is looking to get the price of the car down to between GBP8,000-9,000.
He added: “We are not there yet but battery technology is coming down all the time and if we get a good reaction to the concept then it could go into production in around five years time.
“It is practical with luggage space and actually quite fast although the speed can be limited which would allow 16 year olds to drive it in Germany – and that gets young people into the Opel brand early.”
