Volkswagen has redesigned its most powerful Golf – the R32 – and will show the new model publicly for the first time at Frankfurt.
This time around, it packs 184kW (250 bhp) under the bonnet and the new 2.8-litre V6 is coupled to VW’s permanent 4Motion four-wheel drive system. Order books open in Germany on 19 August and first deliveries will be at the end of Septemberat prices starting at €32,200.
The latest R32 has a top speed of 250 km/h (150mph) and comes either with a six-speed manual gearbox or the optional dual clutch gearbox (DSG). Equipped with DSG, the R32 is the latest VW Group car to be faster in automatic form than the manual equivalent: it takes 6.2 instead of 6.5 seconds to accelerate from rest to 100 km/h.
The R32 is distinguished from lesser Golfs by its unique aluminium-effect shield-shaped radiator grille. Two more large openings on each side of the grille supply fresh air and there are additional air ducts at the bottom and on either side of the fully painted front bumper. The lines of the air duct continue along the side skirt into the rear bumper.
The rear of the Golf R32 is also designed as a fully painted bumper. Only the middle section in the shape of a diffuser is in black. The two round tailpipes made of polished stainless steel are placed centrally next to each other and are integrated prominently in the rear bumper. Eighteen-inch, 20-spoke ‘Zolder’ light-alloy wheels are standard and the brake callipers are painted blue. 345 mm (diameter) are used discs at the front and 310 mm at the rear.

By GlobalDataThe 225/40 tyres have Y-pattern tread for high-speed tyres up to 300km/h and a large rear spoiler provides extra downdraught to keep the rear wheels on the road. The fact that the wheel-tyre combination sits snugly in the wheel housings is partly due to the 18-inch wheel size but also to the specially tuned sports running gear that is lower by 20 millimetres.
Inside, the R32 has instruments, sports seats, aluminium-look pedals, sports leather steering wheel and unique gear shift knob.
Standard equipment includes automatic air conditioning, RCD 300 audio system with ten loudspeakers, anti-theft alarm system plus, multifunction display, automatic anti-dazzle interior mirror, rain sensor, bi-xenon headlamps, tyre pressure monitor and safety package of six airbags, ESP and brake assistant.
