BMW will show a hybrid concept with a new, advanced battery technology at the IAA in Frankfurt next month, Automotive News Europe reports. The vehicle will feature so-called high-performance capacitors, or “syncaps”, which can store and release high amounts of power quickly.

The added torque and power only lasts for a few seconds. But as quickly as the power reserve of the syncaps is exhausted, they can be recharged.
BMW research and development chief Burkhard Goeschel favours syncap technology instead of full hybrid vehicles. “We favour fast systems, such as syncaps,” he told Automotive News Europe earlier this year.
BMW first showed the system in 2004 in a concept car badged “X5 Efficient Dynamics”. Syncap technology is less heavy than regular batteries, and the capacitors can be stored in the doorsills.
The technology will likely be shown in an X3 concept car. A BMW spokesman declined to comment.
