The French passenger market was up 2.8% in January, with 168,668 new passenger cars registered, according to French trade association CCFA.
Demand for light commercial vehicles (under 5 tonnes) was up 11.6% at 37,305 units.
The CCFA noted that there were 22 working days in January 2006, compared to 21 in 2005, so this could contribute to some of the increase. Otherwise the month on month trend does not show that the market is moving in any particular direction and is described as having started out the year in ‘an uncertain manner’.
Taking the light vehicle market as a whole the market was up 4.3%.
Heavy vehicle registrations (over 5 tonnes but excluding buses and coaches) were down 31.8% in January (3,786 registrations), but this followed an exceptional year which saw registrations up 17%.
