Newly-formed Renault Ireland will become a subsidiary of France’s Renault Group for the distribution of vehicles and spare parts, and the provision of after sales services in Ireland, from 1 November, subject to the authorities’ agreement.

Renault hopes to develop its sales in a “promising market” that reached 220 000 units in 2006. The brand is aiming for 9% market share (car & LCV) by 2010, up from 5.4% in 2006.

Renault is taking over Glencullen Distributors which has imported its cars for 21 years.

Chairman Bill Cullen grew Renault sales to more than 11,900 in 2006 and will continue to sell the model line through six dealerships of the CityGate Motor Group.

Cullen said : “With the full resources of the Renault Group behind the surge of new models coming into Ireland in the next 18 months, we now have the opportunity to take Renault to at least a 9% market share. I will be delighted to put the full force of our Citygate Motor Group into achieving that objective.”
